A spacious traditional Japanese house, just a short walk from Omicho Market & Higashi Chaya District, in the historic Hikosomachi samurai neighborhood
‘Suiki’ Machiya House is a renovated traditional Japanese holiday house (vacation rental) just a short walk from both Omicho Market and the Higashi Chaya District, located in Kanazawa’s historic Hikosomachi neighborhood. Once home to high-ranking samurai in service to Maeda Toshiie—the powerful daimyō of the Kaga Domain—this area is known for its elegant architecture and Edo-period legacy. Reflecting this distinguished past, ‘Suiki’ retains the refined design typical of samurai residences.
Spanning 135㎡ (1,457 ft²), ‘Suiki’ is especially spacious and consists of two distinct machiya buildings connected by a covered outdoor walkway. Inside, you’ll find a large dining area, kitchen, a comfortable living room with a 65-inch TV, and striking fusuma doors featuring abstract artwork of Kanazawa’s iconic matsu pine trees. Natural wood accents and earthen tones throughout create a calming retreat.
One of the home’s standout features is its two Japanese gardens, offering scenic views from various rooms. The main bathroom includes a deep soaking tub overlooking a garden and a double-basin vanity, while an additional shower room provides extra convenience. Upstairs, two ‘wayoshitsu’-style bedrooms (blending Japanese and Western elements) feature tatami and wood flooring, traditional design details, and both futon and Western-style beds.
With four bedrooms, two bathrooms, five Western beds, and four futons, ‘Suiki’ comfortably accommodates up to 12 guests—ideal for families or groups seeking a relaxing and authentic stay in Kanazawa.
A little background on how ‘Suiki’ earned its name: Hikosomachi was once home to samurai families, including the esteemed Fuwa clan. High-ranking samurai residences often featured Japanese gardens—symbols of status and cultural refinement. That spirit of harmony with nature lives on Suiki, which combines the characters for “greenery” (翠) and “resonance” (響), reflecting the idea of nature, tradition, and people in harmony.
